Course Description and Desired
Outcomes
This seminar will provide you with the opportunity to
study the preparation and delivery of biblical sermons. It will explore the nature of biblical relevance and the
uniqueness of the biblical message in our noisy world of competing
ideologies. It will also
provide a framework for extracting ideas from the biblical text with the
view of communicating them effectively to today’s audience.
Through your participation in the seminar you will be
able to prepare and present a biblical message crafted for your intended
audience based on developing the competencies to do the following:
1.
Articulate the biblical theology of preaching
2.
Demonstrate the ability to extract and formulate a homiletic
idea of the
sermon
3.
Construct an outline and write out a manuscript of the sermon
4.
Present a biblical sermon without the use of manuscript or notes

Assignments and Evaluation
A.
Reading the Assigned Texts
You will be asked to complete the reading of Robinson’s,
Biblical Preaching, prior to the 2nd week of classes. This
will form a common basis for our discussion. You should finish
reading Chapell’s book, Christ-Centered Preaching, before the 5th
session. You will be expected to report on the completion of
your reading. Failure to complete the reading will result in a
deduction from your final grade.
B. Reflection
and Ministry Setting Papers
20%
For the 3rd session you will be asked to submit a Reflective
Paper. In it you will reflect on your personal world. You
will analyze your family influences, your educational experiences, and
briefly reflect on your spiritual pilgrimage. This should help you
to think about who you are in the process of preaching. The paper should
be no more than 10 pages.
For the 5th session you will be required to write a
Ministry Setting Paper. You will reflect on the history of your
church and its cultural setting as well as its present dynamics and
theological convictions. Since church is people, this analysis
should give you more insight into the lives of the men and women to whom
you preach. The paper should be no more than 10 pages.
C.
Participation in the Seminar and Threaded Sites
10%
You will get from the seminar what you put into it. There
will be many opportunities for thoughtful interaction and exchange of
ideas. Everyone will be invited and expected to participate in the
discussion and exercises.
To maximize our learning experience we will create
collaborative cohorts each consisting of three participants. The
cohorts will cooperate in the process of sermon preparation through
postings on the Threaded Site on the internet. This way you can help
each other in the preparation of your sermons through the process of
threaded reflection. We will also provide you with help and feedback
along the way. Part of the instruction in the course will take place
through the weekly interaction on the Threaded Sites.
D.
Preparation of Textual and Sermon Outlines
10%
In working with the assigned passage you will be asked to prepare
an outline of the text followed by a sermon outline. These two
outlines are not necessarily the same as one sketches the biblical
author’s flow of thought and the other sketches the flow of ideas in the
sermon. You will present both outlines for discussion and critique
in class.
E.
Preparation and Delivery of an Introduction
10%
In the process of working on your biblical message you will be
required to prepare an introduction to your message based on the criteria
offered in class. You will have an opportunity to present your
introduction in class for a group response and evaluation. The
introduction will be no longer than 3-4 minutes.
F.
Communicating the Biblical Message
50%
At the end of the course you will be asked to deliver a biblical
sermon from the chosen passage without notes. The sermon must be
limited to a maximum of 20 minutes. The message will be based on the
biblical passage approved by the second week of the seminar. You
will be required to submit a complete manuscript of your sermon for
evaluation (not to exceed 10 pages). Following your presentation we
will take the time to analyze your work in view of the class material.
The evaluation will be aimed at helping you craft more effective messages
while helping you to become a better communicator.
